MakeMKV is your one-click solution to convert video that you own into a free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere. MakeMKV is a format converter, otherwise called "transcoder". It converts the video clips from proprietary (and usually encrypted) disc into a set of MKV files, preserving most information but not changing it in any way. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta-information and preserve chapters. There are many players that can play MKV files nearly on all platforms, and there are tools to convert MKV files to many formats, including DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Additionally MakeMKV can instantly stream decrypted video without intermediate conversion to wide range of players, so you may watch Blu-ray and DVD discs with your favorite player on your favorite OS or on your favorite device.
- Reads DVD and Blu-ray discs
- Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS and BD+
- Preserves all video and audio tracks, including HD audio
- Preserves chapters information
- Preserves all meta-information (track language, audio type)
- Fast conversion - converts as fast as your drive can read data.
- No additional software is required for conversion or decryption.
- Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free.
- All features (including Blu-ray decryption and processing) are free during BETA.
MakeMKV contains both freeware and shareware functionality. More information can be found here.

So, how is this a FREEWARE if it costs $50? There's not way to install only DVD version (without Bluray functionality) because there isn't DVD-only version, as some people state here. Any comments on this convoluted word-game crap? ;-)))
I’ve found that best way to “test” your rips is by playing the MKV file(s) back with VLC – but applications like Media Player Classic, or your other favorite media player should work just fine as well … as long as it offers switching audio tracks and subtitles.
In the main window, go to the Video tab. If you want to use VideoToolbox with either H.264 or HEVC, make sure you select that option from the list of encoders, then set your desired bitrate. 6000kbps gets good results for H.264. For HEVC, 4000kbps gets perfectly good results at a smaller file size, while 6000kbps will get you a picture closer to that of the original, with a file size roughly one-third larger.
ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL )" /dev/null ; brew install caskroom/cask/brew-cask 2> /dev/null
Computer administrator privileges are required on Windows to run the beta version. This is limitation of Windows SCSI application programming interface. Eventually MakeMKV will not require administrator privileges to run.
NOTE: MakeMKV is not signed by Apple, you might need to adjust gatekeeper options in order to install the program.
